The Blytheweigh Mining Team attends the Mining 121 and Indaba Conferences, Cape Town, 2019
When the first week of February comes around, the Blytheweigh (“Bw”) mining team routinely jumps on a flight to Cape Town for the Mining 121 and Indaba conferences, along with the many other mining companies and associated service providers, with everyone heading to the coastal city not only to market their business but also to discuss hot topics in the industry.
The week starts off, as it always does, with the time-honoured ‘Indaba Starts Here’ party, the first of many drinks parties to follow in the week, co-hosted by Bw, Gowlings, Crowe, VSA Capital, Riverfort, EAS Advisors, Moshe Capital, Carly Olsen and Clifton Hill Associates – and this year is was larger than ever!! The evening was a great success, and the team caught up with old friends as well making a lot of new ones. Additionally, the event raised 50,000 Rand for the Kusasa project to help “at risk” children reach their potential – what a way to kick off the week!
Between the networking comes the business meetings and this year 121 conference hosted its largest investment summit to date with 115 companies and a growing number of investors attending. The two-day agenda was packed with investor meetings, presentations and some very engaging panellist discussions ranging from the state of the industry portfolio strategy and value creation and a look at the value chain for battery minerals extraction. The main themes of the week focused on M&A, funding and development, with mixed reviews surrounding the sentiment of the market. However there seemed to be cautious optimism for the outlook for the rest of the year.
Bw provided support to a number of our clients who made their way down for the conferences, and as always, hosted our annual client dinner - which has to be one of the highlights of the trip. Given the global nature of the industry, our clients are based across the globe with operations and offices from Nevada to Kazakhstan, so this event provides an opportunity to all come together for an evening.
Following a successful 2019, we look forward to returning next year.
